Mother Mary MacKillop, also known as the Blessed Mary MacKillop, was an Australian nun venerated and remembered for helping and educating the poor and the needy, particularly women and children.
Mother Mary MacKillop's Scottish Parentage
Mary Helen MacKillop was born in Melbourne in Australia on January 15, 1842, the eldest of eight children. Her parents were Alexander MacKillop and his wife Flora MacDonald, both immigrants to Australia from Scotland.
Her father Alexander originated from the small village of Roy Bridge in Lochaber, not far from Spean Bridge and Fort William in Scotland's West Highlands.
