With the holistic nature that characterizes the field, anthropology leaves room for one to study various aspects of human culture. As time progresses, new approaches and sub- disciplines develop as researchers explore new and innovative ways to gain insight into the social processes upon which societies are built. Visual Anthropology is one such approach and it employs new and experimental methods that provide an effective avenue in which to guide ethnographic research.

What is Visual Anthropology?

Visual anthropology is a sub- discipline of the cultural anthropological subfield that focuses on the use of ethnographic film, photography and new media in anthropological research. This course of study also includes the exploration of visual representations in culture which include visual art, performance, local media, tattoos, photographs, rituals, jewelry, architecture, etc. These representations are studied and recorded in order to determine their functions within a cultural context. Such analysis is based on the theory that cultures establish themselves on the symbolic significances that characterize the local visual culture.

Visual Anthropology is unique and innovative as it relies on visual data as equally as much, if not more, than it does on ethnographic field notes. It is common for photographic and film archives to be kept within an anthropology department or media lab as to uphold the integrity of the obtain information. Such practice has given visual anthropology a interdisciplinary front; one that crosses between anthropology, technology, digital media, and communication.
