The Crimson Tide had a down year in 2010, made all the worse by letting the lead slip in the Iron Bowl. You could tell in the Bowl game that the team was fired up as they had Michigan State beaten by half time. I fully expect this attitude to carry over into 2011. The main question mark with the team is at QB. Game manager Greg McElroy departs and at the time of writing it seems Coach Saban is considering a double headed QB with AJ McGarron and Phillip Sims sharing time – it could even be a Florida type situation from last year as athlete Blake Sims is also in the mix. If they use multiple QB’s I think this will derail their National Title hopes – I just don’t think it will work. McGarron or Sims have to show they can take care of the football – you will remember McGarron getting chewed out by Coach Saban for throwing a dangerous pass against Mississippi State and it seems this is still a problem – thus him not being named the starter by now.

Whoever is at QB, they will have the luxury of handing off to Heisman contender Trent Richardson. They will need someone to share carries with him with Eddie Lacy leading the pack. The offensive line returns 4 starters including pro hopeful William Vlachos. Left tackle is the only question position – Alfred McCullough and Tyler Love are battling it out.

The defense is the best in college football. The complex system has pro scouts flocking to Tuscaloosa. NT Josh Chapman, OLB/DE Courtney Upshaw and SS Mark Barron come into the season pushing to be first round picks. Underclassman wise they have top talent in ILB’s Nico Johnson and Dont’a Hightower (who will hopefully be 100% this season) plus CB Dre Kirkpatrick and FS ball hawk Robert Lester (8 interceptions in 2010). This unit may have to carry the offense at times – but it’s more than capable of doing so.
