On 19 August 2010 the UK’s Telegraph newspaper reported that England’s Commonwealth Games athletes have been made aware of concerns in India for terrorist attacks on soft targets. While being reassuring that there are no specific threats to the safety of Commonwealth Games team members, the report serves to further focus attention on what is already a huge debate over India’s ability to conduct a safe and successful event.
Ensuring Effective Security at the Commonwealth Games
Security will be top priority for organisers as they prepare for an influx of visitors from around the Commonwealth. Competitors in 17 sporting codes will gather for their four-yearly celebration of family in what has become known as the “Friendly Games”. There are elements that would like to spoil the party, and security concerns for the Delhi Commonwealth Games have been widely expressed.
The fear of terrorism at the Commonwealth Games is not helped by delays in completing venue preparation. In The Australian newspaper on 17 August, South Asia correspondent Amanda Hodge reported that counter-terrorism expert Dr Ajai Sahni was "extremely worried" about the delays in construction of Games facilities.
