College First Lesbian Time

Although I earned my college degree and found long-term work in my field, I sometimes wish I could do college over with the things I’ve learned since graduating. Here is my advice for first generation college students who would prefer to get it done right the first time, and have fewer regrets than I do.

Once School Starts, Schedule Some Time to Relax

If you’re the first in your family to attend college, you may have accomplished this on your own, through a lot of hard work that began in high school, or perhaps even in junior high. If you’re feeling a bit worn out, take some time to relax: a set time each day, week and month. Don’t slack on your college homework, work-study jobs or regular jobs. But do enjoy this early part of your college experience. I enjoyed a few weeks of relatively stress-free college life before the real studying began.

Have a Detailed Post-Graduation Financial Plan

A financial plan is important. After you’ve become familiar with your classes, extracurricular activities and work, draw up a first draft of your post-graduation financial plan, and update it a few times a year. I suggest doing this in your freshman year and perhaps no later than your sophomore year because if you start saving from part-time and summer jobs this early, you could possibly save thousands of dollars for your move from college to where you will be living and working after graduation.
